This 1000+sqf home has soft shapes, organic-looking materials and a natural color palette that recurs throughout the space to evoke a sense of comfort and belonging for a family of three.
Our clients had a strong vision and design wise, were savvy. A direction was given to us to build a home that would be warm and cosy, with some memorable features carried over from their previous home. Features such as panelled doors and the mosaic tiles across their previous kitchen’s backsplash. An addition to these, the home owners also requested for patterned floor tiles and muted colored subway tiles within the bathrooms. Blending the old with the new, together, we created a familiar yet, new and timeless home for the family. We echoed back with a unique material palette and mood images shown here.
We picked out rattan as a material that was a theme that appeared in multiple spaces through the home. It helped add texture and created a sense of lightness within the built-up furniture. Soft tones for hard finishes were selected to sit upon the existing dark floors (ie. pine wood, blushed doors, white stone). Arches were created to demarcate functional zones and at times, to connect spaces. Bringing down structures within the kitchen area allowed for more natural lighting to brighten up the space, and to allow parents to watch their child through the glass windows as they prepare for meals.
The initial space had plenty of potential. We immediately got down to thinking of areas where we could accentuate, brighten and open up. Creating a welcoming arch, creating textures, imagining new spaces.
The kitchen seemed magnified after we punched out windows on a low wall, introduced large format floor tiles, and clean bright surfaces for the kitchen carpentry.
Aside from planning BIG, we also allowed room to dot the space SMALL details. Eye grabbing hardware- wall sconce, bronze and brass handles, and centre-piece-worthy ceiling pendants.
All in all, the team had a wonderful time thinking about, planning and building this space; but more importantly, spending time with this wonderfully, cheerful and giving family of 3. This experience will be forever remembered.
