The leaf and its tree
The leaf and its tree.
Once in awhile, we tire of the authorities.
Once in awhile, we despise team work.
Once in awhile we dream of calling everything our own.
…If only I could spread my own wings..
On an afternoon jog in my backyard, I see a plump green leaf, beautiful, but on the ground. It stands out from its withered brethren, strewn all over the hardened, dry footpath.
I look up and behold! this strong and mighty tree that the leaf had recently departed from.
As I continue the run, I think about how our digital present has enabled us to easily strike it out on our own. We live in a futuristic work-world that allows us to transfer whatever (hopefully of value) to whomever, to wherever, whenever. Further more, the economic infrastructure of our land (Singapore) has fortunately allowed us to take risks and leaps, sometimes without even batting an eyelid.
The way of the solo sojourner may be alluring. However, through my own passage and also, observing others’ journeys, I see a natural sensibility of belonging to a tree- a family of unique contributors, branching out as one to reach new heights, towards the sun.
As leaves, we belong to a great, strong and deeply rooted core. Together, we weather storms by weaving tightly to one another. As a singular tree, we make a huge contribution to the surrounding community (shed, oxygen, color and stability). We give back to the heart and source, while taking in nutrients and growing from strength to strength.
Jogging further into my thoughts, the scorching and unforgiving footpath rattles me. Without being connected to a life source, a plump leaf can die out within hours exposed to heat.. or even swept away by tormenting rain.
That said, should one choose to depart from the tree, let’s hope that you are humble seed that will find fertile soil, bear fruit, and grow into a mighty tree one day. Until then, love the soil you’re on, extend those olive branches, and put down your roots.
