5 Trending Bedroom Feature Wall Ideas to Make Your Rest More Comfy

Designing a bedroom can be tricky. You don’t want to make it too bland so it becomes a boring place to chill, but you also wouldn’t want it to be so fancy that it distracts you from a good night's sleep. Many homeowners in Singapore decide to move around this by adding a feature wall right behind their bed.

This feature wall then becomes the main focal point of the room, accenting the overall space and providing an added cosiness. Furthermore, some feature wall materials could even help to soundproof and reduce echoes for a better rest.

Want to incorporate a feature wall in your bedroom? Let’s take a look at some of our clients’ bedroom feature walls from BuildBuilt’s residential projects.

1. Grey Jacobean panelling feature wall in a modern luxe bedroom

Jacobean panel as bedroom feature wall from Quiet Luxury project.

This is from one of our three-bedroom condo projects. In line with a quiet luxury theme, the homeowners wanted their bedroom to be tranquil while maintaining a darker material palette. Therefore, soothing matte grey colours were chosen for the room accents and furniture alike.

The Jacobean panelling was recommended by our interior designer as the feature wall, successfully adding more textures and stylistic symmetry to this monochromatic bedroom. This feature wall was designed to stretch across the entire wall, giving our clients the flexibility to switch out different-sized bed frames and side tables whenever required.

If you’re a fan of colonial style panelling, this Jacobean feature wall is a great option to add some subtle depth to a plain wall without being overly ornate.

2. Arch niche feature wall in a soft beige hue dominated theme

Our clients for this Boucle and Rattan project specifically requested a bedroom with soft beige and gold tones to match the overall theme of the house. They wanted to incorporate a warm ambience in the bedroom, particularly during sunrise and sunset when sunlight illuminates the room. This colour combination also helps maintain a bright and airy vibe without being overly glaring.

In addition to being the focal point, the arched niche wall was added to conceal electrical sockets and cables. The organically shaped mirror on the left side helps to balance the off-centre bedroom arrangement, filling up the longer wall catered for bathroom access.

The pendant light with a unique ray pattern in the right corner is a nice addition to the space and is said to bring wealth and fortune to the homeowners.

3. Geometric feature wall with accent recessed lighting

With an autumn vibe as the main theme, this bedroom was designed with olive green, warm white, and wooden accents. The geometric-shaped feature wall above the bed is the focal point of this bedroom, highlighted by warm white recessed LED lighting. The half white and green colour blocked wall add interest to the room while still being soothing to the eyes.

The combination of geometric shapes and curves, along with the lighting and colours, perfectly captures the calm and serene vibe of the autumn season, making the bedroom a cosy space to retreat to after a long day of work.

4. Fluted panelling with cove lighting as a feature wall in a dark luxe bedroom

A dark elegant room with fluted paneling as its feature wall from Modern Luxe Home.

This modern luxe bedroom features fluted panelling as the centrepiece of its feature wall, creating an effortlessly luxurious look.

The cove strip lighting along the built-in fluted headboard softly illuminates the timber textures, exuding a soothing and elegant ambience, especially at night. Two-way switches integrated into the headboard add convenience for the perfect wind down routine.

The dark monochromatic palette of the bedroom is further enhanced by the warm toned parquet flooring and the matte black headboard, making the space even cosier as a place to have restful nights of sleep.

5. Farmhouse-style shiplap feature wall

Shiplap feature wall from Glentrees Farmhouse project.

The shiplap feature wall in this farmhouse styled home adds a natural and charming touch to the clutter-free bedroom.

The wood grain texture embodies the farmhouse charm, complementing the warm tones of the cream wall paint and wood flooring. Recessed lighting above the feature wall provides a wash of light over the wood grain texture, creating a softly lit background at night.

To compensate for the lack of space for bedside tables, a narrow ledge was incorporated above the headboard, providing a convenient area for clients to place their phone or book before winding down for the day.

While a feature wall in your bedroom isn't always necessary, it can enhance visual appeal and add comfort to a simple bedroom. However, careful planning is essential to avoid it being overly stimulating or make the space feel narrower.

Other than design and space availability, homeowners who want to incorporate a bedroom feature wall should also take the following into consideration:

  • Maintenance: Some materials, like timber, may require regular upkeep to stay clean and free from mould over time in our humidity. Highly detailed panelling would require more dusting than flat painted walls.

  • Functionality: Beyond aesthetic purposes, a feature wall should also serve a functional role, such as muffling outside noise or hiding unsightly wires and cables.

  • Budget: Designed that have higher requirements for skilled workmanship like fluted panelling or special effects paint, will increase your budget compared to building simple bedside ledges.

  • Personal Taste: If you easily get bored with decor, consider choosing less permanent materials, such as wallpapers that you can switch out without changing other parts of any built-ins.
